The Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking journeys in the Everest region. It combines the iconic Everest Base Camp (5,364m), the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, and the high glacier crossing of Cho La Pass (5,420m). This route connects two major valleys of the Khumbu, creating a more diverse and rewarding experience than the standard Everest Base Camp trail.
This 16-day Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek with us is carefully planned to ensure proper acclimatization, safety, and a complete Himalayan experience. From your arrival in Nepal to your return, every day is organized with attention to health, comfort, and immersion in local culture.
Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek, which follows a single route in and out, this itinerary forms a partial circuit that introduces quieter trails, glacier terrain, and a more varied landscape. A key feature of this package is daily health monitoring, ensuring you can safely progress through high-altitude sections such as Cho La Pass.
Your journey begins with a spectacular flight to Lukla, followed by a gradual trek along the Dudh Koshi River to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), where you spend a day acclimatizing with a hike to Syangboche and lunch at the Everest View Hotel. The trail continues to Tengboche Monastery for a traditional puja ceremony, then heads toward the quieter Gokyo Valley through Dole and Machhermo, where the landscape opens into a series of high-altitude lakes beneath towering peaks.
At Gokyo, you hike Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for expansive views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, before crossing Cho La Pass, a demanding stretch of glacier terrain and steep ascents. After rejoining the main trail at Lobuche, you continue to Everest Base Camp, and the journey concludes with a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar (5,545m) before descending through Pheriche, Namche, and Lukla.
Upon arrival in Nepal, our team will warmly welcome you at the airport and transfer you to your 5-star hotel in Kathmandu. In the evening, you will join a welcome dinner, team introduction, and a detailed trek briefing. The briefing includes detailed information about the trail, safety measures, rescue procedures, first aid support, emergency contact, gear checklist, and daily health monitoring procedures. A pulse check measuring oxygen, temperature, and heartbeat, along with an overall health check and feedback, is conducted before dinner.
Begin the journey with an early scenic 25–35 minute mountain flight to Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport. After landing, meet your trekking team and begin a comfortable trek to Phakding through traditional Sherpa settlements and alongside the Dudh Koshi River. You will walk for 3 to 4 hours. Unlimited lunch and dinner are included. A morning health check and an evening briefing will be conducted.
Today's trail continues through suspension bridges, pine forests, and river crossings. The day includes the famous Hillary Bridge crossing before a steep final ascent to Namche Bazaar, the main trading and cultural hub of the Khumbu region. On clear days, you may see your first glimpse of Everest. You will walk for 5 to 6 hours. Unlimited breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. A morning health check and a daily briefing will be conducted.
This day is carefully planned for proper acclimatization before you divert to the quieter Gokyo Valley. Hike to Syangboche Airport and continue to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 meters. Enjoy lunch with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. Visit the Everest Nest in Syangboche for coffee and mountain documentaries. Return to the hotel, refresh with a hot shower, and clean clothes. Unlimited breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. A morning health check and evening pulse check will be conducted.
Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail, the route diverts toward the quieter Gokyo Valley. The trail gradually ascends through rhododendron and pine forests. The trail follows the lateral moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal at over 36 kilometers, before reaching the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, the highest freshwater lake system in the world. You will cross the first two lakes before arriving at the main village of Gokyo on the shore of the third lake. You will walk for 5 to 6 hours. Unlimited breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. A morning health check and a daily briefing will be conducted.

The standard itinerary takes 16 days, including arrival and departure. This allows proper acclimatization for Gokyo Valley and a safe crossing of Cho La Pass.
It is challenging due to the altitude and Cho La Pass. You need previous high-altitude trekking experience (above 4,000m), good fitness, and sure-footedness. No technical climbing is required, but Cho La involves glacier walking where microspikes or crampons may be necessary.
The cost varies depending on services, group size, and season. Contact Kalapatthar for detailed pricing, including permits, flights, guide, and teahouse stays.
Yes, hiring a guide is mandatory for safety, navigation across Cho La Pass, glacier sections, and emergency response. Remote sections have unclear trails. Our guides are licensed, English-speaking, and trained in first aid.
Yes, altitude sickness is a concern on this trek due to elevations above 5,000 meters. Proper acclimatization, daily health monitoring, and descent options help reduce risks.
Three permits are required: Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit ($30 USD), Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee ($20-30 USD), and TIMS card (if applicable).
Yes, microspikes or light crampons are required for crossing Cho La Pass. These can be rented in Namche Bazaar for approximately $10 to $15. Your guide will check your gear before the pass day.
A full contingency plan is provided in the itinerary section. Options include waiting one day, taking an alternative route via Renjo La Pass, or descending to join the standard EBC trail. Your guide will assess conditions and recommend the safest option.
