About this tour

The Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking journeys in the Everest region. It combines the iconic Everest Base Camp (5,364m), the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, and the high glacier crossing of Cho La Pass (5,420m). This route connects two major valleys of the Khumbu, creating a more diverse and rewarding experience than the standard Everest Base Camp trail.

This 16-day Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek with us is carefully planned to ensure proper acclimatization, safety, and a complete Himalayan experience. From your arrival in Nepal to your return, every day is organized with attention to health, comfort, and immersion in local culture.

Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek, which follows a single route in and out, this itinerary forms a partial circuit that introduces quieter trails, glacier terrain, and a more varied landscape. A key feature of this package is daily health monitoring, ensuring you can safely progress through high-altitude sections such as Cho La Pass.

Trek to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Valley

Your journey begins with a spectacular flight to Lukla, followed by a gradual trek along the Dudh Koshi River to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), where you spend a day acclimatizing with a hike to Syangboche and lunch at the Everest View Hotel. The trail continues to Tengboche Monastery for a traditional puja ceremony, then heads toward the quieter Gokyo Valley through Dole and Machhermo, where the landscape opens into a series of high-altitude lakes beneath towering peaks.

At Gokyo, you hike Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for expansive views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, before crossing Cho La Pass, a demanding stretch of glacier terrain and steep ascents. After rejoining the main trail at Lobuche, you continue to Everest Base Camp, and the journey concludes with a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar (5,545m) before descending through Pheriche, Namche, and Lukla.

Flora and Fauna Along the Trail
The route runs through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich ecosystem. Lower sections pass through forests of rhododendron, blue pine, and fir, with rhododendron blooming in shades of red, pink, and white each spring. Higher up, the vegetation thins into alpine shrub, juniper, and eventually bare rock near the glaciers. Wildlife along the way includes the Himalayan tahr and musk deer at lower and mid elevations, alongside the elusive snow leopard, rarely seen even by experienced trekkers. Birdlife features the Himalayan monal, Nepal's national bird, along with the snow pigeon and Himalayan griffon. Blue sheep are often spotted on the cliffs near Cho La Pass.
Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty
This trek sits at a challenging level, more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp route but less strenuous than the full Three Pass circuit. Trekkers walk 5 to 7 hours on normal days, while the Cho La Pass crossing can extend to 7 or 9 hours depending on weather and terrain. The main challenges include sustained high altitude with multiple nights above 4,800 m at Gokyo, the physically demanding Cho La Pass crossing over glacier terrain and loose scree, and limited facilities in remote areas such as Dzongla and Gorak Shep. Previous high-altitude trekking experience above 4,000 m is strongly recommended, and sure-footedness on glacier terrain is essential.
Best Time for the Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp Trek
Spring (March to May) Clear skies, stable weather, and moderate temperatures make this a comfortable window for trekking. Rhododendron forests bloom along the lower trails, April offers balanced temperatures and strong visibility, and Cho La Pass is generally accessible throughout the season. Autumn (September to November) Post-monsoon skies turn crystal clear with dry trails and sharp views of Everest and its neighbouring peaks. October stands out as the peak month for visibility, while November offers quieter trails with colder temperatures. Winter and Monsoon Winter turns extremely cold, with temperatures dropping below -20°C at higher elevations, and Cho La Pass is often snow-blocked, suited only to well-equipped, experienced trekkers. The monsoon season brings rain, flight delays, and slippery trails, making spring and autumn the recommended windows for this trek.
Permits and Documentation
This trek requires permits arranged through a registered agency, such as Kalapatthar Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd.. Kalapatthar processes every permit before departure from Kathmandu at official government rates, with no handling fees added.
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit costs USD 30 per person and supports conservation and trail maintenance across the park
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee costs USD 20 to 30 per person, collected near Lukla or Monjo
  • A Trekker Information Management System (TIMS) card is arranged where currently required by regulations
Accommodation and Food on the Trek
The package includes three nights in a 5-star Kathmandu hotel, with twin-sharing rooms and breakfast included. Along the trail, standard teahouse lodges provide clean, twin-sharing accommodation and genuine Sherpa hospitality throughout the journey. Meals are generously provided, with unlimited breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus unlimited tea and coffee throughout the trek. A welcome dinner and a farewell dinner in Kathmandu bookend the journey with a proper taste of Nepali hospitality.

Safety and Important Notes

Guides monitor oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and temperature twice daily throughout the journey, with an additional critical check conducted after the Cho La Pass crossing.  Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking to 5,500 m and emergency helicopter evacuation is mandatory for every trekker. A guide is required for safety and navigation, since the Cho La glacier crossing and remote sections beyond Namche demand experienced route-finding.
