Empowering individuals with disabilities, trauma, and life challenges to explore the Himalayas.

Our Thoughts Towards Accessible Travel

Nepal, the land of adventure, offers countless opportunities for trekking, climbing expeditions, and other thrilling activities such as skydiving, paragliding, and jungle safaris. Every year, hundreds of thousands of travelers from around the world visit Nepal to experience its natural beauty and adventurous spirit. Travel and adventure are essential for happiness, and everyone has the right to enjoy these experiences. Adventure must be accessible to all, regardless of physical ability.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide experience significant disabilities, representing about 16% of the global population. While disability rates increase with age, a substantial portion of this population includes children and working-age adults. In the United States alone, as of early 2025, there are approximately 5.5 million veterans with service-connected disabilities. Disability rates among younger veterans (under 45) are rising faster than among older cohorts, with roughly 39% of post-9/11 veterans reporting a service-connected disability.

Millions of people around the world are differently abled, whether due to birth, accidents, or other circumstances. Yet, many have made remarkable contributions to society and deserve the opportunity to explore and experience the world. Their rights and achievements must be acknowledged and celebrated.

Differently abled individuals have already achieved extraordinary feats in adventure. In 2023, British veteran Hari Budha Magar, who lost both legs in Afghanistan in 2011, successfully summited Mount Everest. Many others with disabilities, whether one leg, visual impairments, or other challenges, have accomplished some of the world’s most daring adventures.

Over the years, Mount Everest has been summited by several extraordinary differently abled climbers who have redefined the limits of human resilience. In 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind person to reach the summit, showcasing remarkable adaptation and teamwork. Mark Inglis followed in 2006 as the first double amputee to summit with prosthetics. Arunima Sinha conquered Everest in 2013 after losing a leg, inspiring millions. In 2018, Xia Boyu reached the peak at age 69. Most recently, in May 2026, Russian former soldier Rustam Nabiev made history by summiting Everest using only his arms and ice axes, without prosthetic limbs, an achievement hailed as one of the most extraordinary in mountaineering history.

Who Can Join These Adventures?

  • Individuals with physical disabilities (amputees, mobility limitations)
  • Visually impaired or blind adventurers
  • People recovering from trauma or PTSD
  • Individuals seeking healing through nature
  • First-time adventurers looking for guided support
  • Veterans and survivors looking for purpose-driven experiences

When organizing expeditions or treks, it is crucial to consider the unique needs of differently abled participants. With proper planning and support, these adventures are achievable. For example:

Double or single amputees can trek with additional manpower and logistical support.
Visually impaired or hearing-impaired individuals can climb or trek safely with experienced professional guides.
Even reaching Everest Base Camp can be facilitated with the use of horses or other assistive measures.

Our team has hands-on experience in organizing such inclusive expeditions. In April 2023, one of our team leaders successfully guided the world’s largest group of veterans – 90% of whom were differently-abled to Everest Base Camp.

We specialize in making adventure accessible to all. Our experienced guides and dedicated team are committed to ensuring that differently abled adventurers can safely and confidently achieve their dreams. With careful planning, determination, and support, nothing is impossible.

Thank you Kala Patthar Team! I wasn’t sure if this was even possible for me. After losing my leg, I thought adventure was something I had to let go of. But the team at Kala Patthar Trek changed that completely.

I joined this trek during a very difficult phase of my life. I was dealing with PTSD and honestly just needed something to reset my mind. The mountains, the slow pace, and the constant support from the team helped me more than I expected. There was no pressure, no judgment just space to breathe and move forward. This journey meant more to me than I can explain.

Trekking in Nepal as a visually impaired person sounded unrealistic at first. But Kala Patthar made it feel completely achievable. My guide was incredible — always attentive, describing the surroundings, helping me stay confident on the trail. I couldn’t ‘see’ the mountains, but I experienced them in a way that felt just as powerful. Truly unforgettable.
