Agasthyarkoodam is nestled in the southern region of the Western Ghats in Kerala. It offers an unparalleled journey through lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. At 1,868 meters above sea level, Agasthyarkoodam is not just a peak; it’s a pilgrimage site revered by locals and trekkers alike. The trek begins at Bonacaud, a small settlement in the Thiruvananthapuram district. The trail passes through the dense forests, rocky terrains, and meandering streams, offering trekkers a challenging experience. The duration of the trek varies depending on the chosen route and the trekker’s pace, typically ranging from two to three days for a round trip.

The trek presents several challenges, including steep ascents, slippery trails during monsoon, and unpredictable weather conditions. Trekkers should be prepared for moderate to strenuous physical fitness and carry essential gear such as sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, first aid kit, and sufficient water and snacks. The weather in the Western Ghats can be unpredictable, with sudden changes in temperature and rainfall.

The best time for trekking is during the dry season, from December to April. during these seasons weather is relatively stable. Agasthyarkoodam trekking is renowned for its rich biodiversity, boasting a diverse range of flora and fauna. During the trek, trekkers  may encounter a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, Nilgiri langurs, and rare bird species.

From the summit of Agasthyarkoodam, trekkers can explore several attractions along the way. These include the Agasthya Mala Biological Park, home to a variety of medicinal plants and herbs, and the Agasthya Mala Peak etc.

Trekkers should obtain necessary permits from the Kerala Forest Department, as access to the peak is restricted to a limited number of visitors per day. It’s advisable to engage the services of experienced guides or join organized trekking groups for a safer and more enjoyable experience. Additionally, respecting the local customs and environment is paramount, as Agasthyarkoodam holds significant cultural and ecological importance for the region.
